"Outdoor education means learning "in" and "for" the outdoors. It is a means of curriculum extension and enrichment through outdoor experiences" (Hammerman, 1980)
Outdoor Education at Sandringham Secondary College offers students the chance to experience different activities that they may not get the opportunity to do in their normal lives. The students are able to participate in many activities including climbing, abseiling, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, bushwalking, camping, navigation, snorkeling, mountain biking, cycling, orienteering, geo caching and more. The students not only get to participate in the activities they also learn the theoretical side of the course. This covers aspects of Outdoor Education such as minimal impact strategies, correct technique in all activities and the principles of Outdoor Education.
The course not only covers the adventure side of the subject but we also look and discuss environmental issues. By understanding the environment and having a sound knowledge of how to help protect it students are able to enjoy Outdoor areas and still have a respect for the flora and fauna.
Being by Rickets Point and Port Phillip Bay there is the perfect opportunity to look at Marine life, use the bay for water activities and look at the local flora. Students partake in camps as well. They can include trips to The Grampians, Phillip Island, Anglesea and other great Victorian destinations.
The following pages were put together by the students and include different activities that can be enjoyed in the Outdoors. Information is through their own knowledge and through research. Photos and information has been cited.
